Anniversary Exhibition Free 90 | HAM

Kristo Saarikoski graduated from the Free Art School in spring 2024. At the time of this interview, he is presenting his solo exhibition Wishing Well at Galerie Forsblom.
Thanks for asking—things are going well! Life after graduation has been unexpectedly busy and full of work, but overall it’s been a fortunate period. After school, I moved into a new studio with my classmate Emilia Hakkarainen, participated in a one-month residency, completed a couple of large commissions, and worked on my exhibition. Amid this pace of life, I also received some difficult personal news this fall. Painting—and especially preparing for this exhibit—became an essential outlet to process that upheaval and look forward.
The works painted during the fall came together into a cohesive exhibition titled Wishing Well, which is now on view at Galerie Forsblom. Though the title evokes wishes, I’ve intentionally left the internal world of each painting open to free interpretation. Rather than presenting my own desires, I hope viewers can draw their own meanings—perhaps even dive into their own hopes, if they wish.
Besides art, I’ve been working regularly as a special instructor at a youth center and leading an art club for artists with developmental disabilities. These social-work responsibilities bring a healthy balance to studio life, which is mostly solitary. Now that the exhibition is up and upcoming projects are on hold, I’m winding down for the Christmas break. I plan to spend as much time as possible with family and friends—they mean everything to me. But I can’t stay away from the studio entirely—I’ll probably prepare a few painting supports for new work.
Painting has become such a dear part of my life that I can’t stay away from it for long.
I’d like to offer all current students plenty of encouragement and courage in their studies. The Free Art School is experiencing a golden era right now, filled with incredibly talented people. Support and uplift each other—the encouragement you give can have a lasting impact.
Especially in a time when the cultural field is under pressure, it’s more important than ever to care for one another, not turn against each other because of scarce resources. I also want to do my part to support current and future students of the Free Art School in any way I can. Please don’t hesitate to reach out, whether it’s something big or small. I received so much support from the Free Art School—now it’s my turn to give back. I wish everyone courage and enthusiasm for the new year and many fresh paintings!
